GTP REGULATIONS

1.- ORGANIZATION

1.1: The Royal Spanish Mountaineering Society Peñalara (RSEA Peñalara)
with the collaboration of the Navacerrada City Council organizes the XV Gran
Trail de Peñalara (GTP), an ultra-resistance mountain race that will be
held in the Sierra de Guadarrama, starting and finishing in the town of
Navacerrada (Madrid), over an approximate distance of 103 km and 10,200
m of accumulated elevation gain, with a maximum time to complete it of 24
hours 30 min
1.2: This race will be semi-self-sufficient, governed by the
present Regulations.

2.- REGISTRATION

2.1: All athletes with a minimum age of 21 years old by the year of the race can register.

 

2.1.1: To participate in this next 2025 edition, it is not necessary to accredit a previous sports curriculum, but it is highly recommended:

For the individual GTP, having finished in the last 3 years any race that appears on the official list of the ITRA or UTMB World, with 3 points or more and having an ITRA or UTMB index of more than 400 points.

2.2: All participants must provide the duly signed document of assumption of responsibility, as well as a medical fitness report certifying that they have the physical capacity for intensive and long-duration sports practice in mountain races competition.

2.2.1: The medical report must be signed and authenticated by a licensed physician, issued in 2025, and those issued before January 1, 2025 will not be valid. It is highly recommended that the medical certificate be obtained together with a stress test, to rule out any pathology that endangers the health of the runner.

The Organization reserves the right to verify the validity of the medical reports, and may take legal action in the case of falsified, amended or altered documents.

2.2.2: The document of assumption of responsibility and the medical report must be uploaded to the runner’s file created on the registration platform before August 20, 2025. If both documents are not received within the established period, the registration will be automatically canceled without the right to a refund of the registration fee.

2.3: The registration fee includes accident and civil liability insurance valid for the duration of the race.

2.4: The formalization of the registration implies the knowledge and acceptance of these Race Regulations, as well as the transfer of image rights to the Organizer and the use of the data provided, as established by the Data Protection Law of the Spanish State.

2.5: Each runner will be given a NOMINATIVE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE bib number/pectoral, which must be worn visibly throughout the race and on the front, without folding or cutting.

2.6: THE BIB NUMBER WILL BE DELIVERED in the place, date and time designated by the Organization, TO THE HOLDER OF THE REGISTRATION PROPERLY IDENTIFIED, presenting proof of registration, original ID, driver’s license or passport. Authorizations to third parties for collection will not be accepted under any circumstances.

2.6.1: At the bib number collection, each runner will be given an identification bracelet on the wrist, which can no longer be removed without breaking it, and which must be worn throughout the race. The bracelet, together with the bib number, will allow access to all the services provided by the Organization. The absence of the bracelet without justified cause will result in the disqualification of the runner.

2.7: Likewise, a chip, or electronic control element, will be delivered, which will be non-transferable, and each participant will be responsible for ensuring its correct reading at the control points established along the route.

2.9: No change of bib number or chip is allowed.

2.10: Those runners who complete the GTP in individual mode will obtain a diploma and a finisher souvenir. If their final time is less than 24 hours, they may also pre-register for the draw to participate in the Western States Endurance 100 of 2026, collecting their arrival time in the general classification and by categories, being able to opt for the trophies as established in section 3 of these Regulations.

2.11: CANCELLATION CONDITIONS

2.11.1: In the event that a runner decides not to participate after having formalized the registration, he/she may request a refund of the fee already paid. For this purpose, the following deadlines and cancellation costs are established:

With cancellation guarantee (1):

100% Refund of Registration Fee

Deadline, from January 1 to September 25, 2025.

The cancellation guarantee fee is non-refundable

Without cancellation guarantee:

Deadline, from January 1 to August 20, 2025.

Cost: 50% of Registration fee

Deadline, from August 21 to September 25.

Cost: 60% of registration fee

  • The Cancellation Guarantee must have been contracted together with the registration.

All requests for reimbursement of the registration fee must be made in writing to the e-mail address info@grantrailgtp.com, indicating personal data and attaching proof of registration. The amount of the refund will be made effective on the card with which the initial payment was made. Outside the established deadlines, the runner who desists from participating will lose the full amount of the registration. In this case, only commemorative gifts will be given to those who pick them up within the established deadlines and times; they will not be sent by mail.

Under no circumstances will a change of ownership of the registration or reservation of a place for future editions be allowed, and those who cannot participate must comply with the provisions of the preceding paragraphs. Changes and registration between the GTP and the TP60 are also not allowed.

2.11.2: In case of cancellation of the race for reasons beyond the organization or force majeure, the organization would retain from the registration fee:

– Until August 1, 2025, 25%

– From August 2 to September 25, 2025, 40%

After September 25 or if one of the races in progress is interrupted for reasons beyond the organization, up to 100% of the registration fee would be retained.

3.-TROPHIES AND CLASSIFICATIONS

3.1: A trophy will be awarded to the first three classified in each established category, both male and female, except in the absolute category where a trophy will be awarded to the first 5 classified. The trophies will not be cumulative, so the winner in the absolute category will not be eligible for the prizes in the subcategories corresponding to their age. In order to be eligible for a trophy, the participation of at least 2 athletes in each category or 2 teams in each category of the relay modality is necessary. If this requirement is not met, only the first classified in the category will be awarded a trophy.

 

3.2: The categories for the classification for the purposes of the individual Gran Trail de Peñalara will be the following (age completed in the year of the race):

3.4: Absence at the awards ceremony will be understood as a waiver of the trophies or prizes won. It is the sole responsibility of each runner to check their classification. Any delegation to another person for the collection of trophies and prizes must be known and authorized by the Organization, at least one hour before the delivery.

4.- ROUTE

4.1: The Gran Trail de Peñalara (GTP) will have the following route: Navacerrada (start) – Maliciosa – Canto Cochino – Hoya de San Blas – Puerto de La Morcuera – Rascafría – Puerto del Reventón –La Granja – Peñalara – Puerto de Cotos – Guarramillas –La Barranca – Navacerrada (finish). There will be a kilometer indicator at the refreshment points.

4.2: The route will be marked by the Organization with brightly colored plastic tape, flags and other signaling elements, located at regular intervals, depending on the type of terrain and roads. It is the responsibility of each participant to locate the signage and follow it. In addition, the Organization will make available to the participants the track in gpx format that must be downloaded.

4.3: The sections of the route that run along roads or streets of towns will not be closed to traffic, and participants must abide by the general traffic regulations or the instructions of the Organization.

It will be mandatory to cross the roads through the zebra crossings or places enabled for the occasion, duly signposted, and participants must pay attention as if they were a normal pedestrian.

4.4: It will be mandatory to follow the marked itinerary, as well as to pass through the established controls that appear in the technical sheet. The runner who cuts or shortens the marked itinerary will be penalized according to the characteristics of the shortened section (slope, distance, difficulty, etc.). The runner who does not pass through all the established controls and correctly validates his chip card or who uses any mechanical means for his displacement, will be disqualified

4.4.1: Apart from those indicated, the Organization will establish as many surprise controls as it deems appropriate along the route.

4.5: Maximum passing times will be established for the different controls, as shown in the technical sheet. However, due to possible itinerary changes, the final cut-off times will be confirmed in the previous technical talk, these being the only valid for all purposes, prevailing over any other information, both physical and verbal, that can be consulted during the development of the race. Those who exceed them, even by a single minute, will have their chip invalidated and must withdraw from the race, their data appearing in the general classification as withdrawn.

For the cut-off time, the moment of arrival at the control point will be taken into account. Even if you arrive at the control point before the cut-off time, the departure from that point may not exceed 10 minutes of the cut-off time.

4.6: The GTP will have an alternative route in order to guarantee the safety of the participants. Its use will be subject to adverse conditions beyond the race. If it is necessary to change the route, it will be announced in the previous technical talk.

4.7: The organization may make any modifications it deems necessary to the route, including the suspension of the race, if weather conditions so advise, or for other reasons of force majeure. In this case, if the start has already taken place, the registration fee will not be refunded.

4.8: If it is necessary to interrupt and suspend the race at a point on the route, the classification will be determined according to the order and time of arrival at the point of interruption or, failing that, at the last control carried out.

5.- SEMI-SELF-SUFFICIENCY

5.1: Given the semi-self-sufficiency nature of the race, each runner must foresee and carry the amount of food, beverages, salts and supplements that he/she deems necessary to complete the route. A mandatory minimum of 1 (one) liter of water per runner is established at the time of departure, and at the departure of each refreshment station.

5.2: The Organization will provide the following refreshments, with drinks and food in quantities estimated as reasonable, which should be consumed in the same place:

 

  • Km 17 – Canto Cochino (liquid + solid)
  • Km 27 – Hoya de San Blas (liquid + fruit)
  • Km 40 –La Morcuera (liquid + solid)
  • Km 55 – Rascafría (liquid + solid)
  • Km 64 – Puerto del Reventón (liquid + solid)
  • Km 71 – La Granja (liquid + solid + pasta)
  • Km 79 – Raso del Pino (liquid + solid)
  • Km 88 – Puerto de Cotos (liquid + solid)
  • Km 94 – Alto Guarramillas (Liquid)
  • Km 103 – Finish line (complete)

5.2.1: No cups will be provided at the refreshment stations. Each runner must carry and use his/her own cup to consume the drinks.

5.2.2: Water will be the only liquid that can be used to refill the drums or hydration bags. The rest of the drinks must be consumed in situ, using the mandatory cup.

5.2.3: The food supplied in the refreshment stations must be consumed in situ and may not be taken out of the reserved area.

5.3: It will be allowed to receive external supplies in the following supplies within the marked areas: *Canto Cochino

*Puerto de la Morcuera

* Rascafría

* La Granja

* Puerto de Cotos

5.4: Each runner must legibly mark his/her bib number, with indelible marker, on the wrappers of bars, gels, food bags, etc., both those carried in the starting backpack, and those deposited in the bag to be transported to Rascafría or those received from external aid at the authorized points.

5.5: It is the obligation of each participant to take their waste to the finish line or places indicated in the refreshment stations.

5.6: Accompaniment by people on foot or by bicycle without a bib number will not be allowed. It will also not be allowed to be accompanied by any type of animal. Unpermitted accompaniment is understood to be when it occurs at any point on the route for more than 200 m. In the case of bicycles, it will be punishable when one circulates continuously next to the runner or in the immediate vicinity (approx. 25 m).

6.- MANDATORY MATERIAL

6.1: Each participant must carry the following mandatory equipment:

    • Thermal survival blanket (minimum surface area 1.2 x 2.1 m)
    • Whistle
    • Hydration system, minimum of 1 liter
    • Food reserve
    • Two headlamps in good working order and with spare batteries for both
    • Red rear position light
    • Mobile phone switched on, charged, and with the organization’s emergency number saved
    • Official race track saved on GPS watch or mobile phone
    • Long-sleeved thermal shirt or short-sleeved shirt plus arm warmers that must cover and protect the entire arm
    • Jacket with hood, made with a waterproof and breathable membrane with a minimum water column of 10,000 mm, long sleeves, and the corresponding size
    • Long pants with waterproof and breathable membrane with a minimum water column of 10,000 mm
    • Gloves
    • Cup max. 33 cl. (separate from the hydration system or bottles)
    • Trail running shoes with good grip, patterned sole, and upper with fastening elements that keep the shoe firmly attached to the foot and protect it entirely up to below the ankle
    • Backpack or fanny pack with sufficient capacity to carry all of the above

In case of adverse weather conditions, the following may also be required (*):

    • Waterproof gloves or glove covers
    • Additional long-sleeved thermal second layer with a minimum weight of 150 gr (excluding cotton)
    • Hat or neck scarf that protects the head from the cold

(*) This circumstance, if necessary, will be communicated in advance and in the technical talk.

6.2: Recommended material:

    • Sunglasses
    • Electrolytes and/or mineral salts
    • Elastic bandage
    • Emergency kit
    • Trekking poles (*)

(*) Runners who choose to use them must carry them from the beginning to the end of the race, and it is not allowed to abandon or hand over the poles at any point on the course.

6.3: Mandatory equipment may be checked at the start, at the finish and/or at any other control point. Runners who do not carry all the mandatory equipment will be penalized according to the Regulations in the penalties section. It is understood that the water will decrease in the course. However, it will be mandatory to carry the minimum required amount of water at the start and after leaving each refreshment point.

6.3.1.: The lack of mandatory equipment that is considered essential according to the circumstances, may lead to a runner being removed from the race, preventing its continuation.

6.4: It will not be allowed to receive or return material, or spare clothing in any place except at the Rascafría post (km 55). To this effect, the Organization will have a bag collection service at the start, to transport it to the indicated post. The Organization is not responsible for the objects deposited in personal bags.

6.5: It will be mandatory to have the headlamp on from the start until 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, and from 7:30 p.m. on Saturday until the end of the race, or as expressly indicated by the Organization, as required by natural light.

7.- WITHDRAWAL AND ABANDONMENT

7.1: Any runner may withdraw from the race whenever they wish, notifying the nearest control or qualified personnel of the Organization who will cancel the bib and chip. From that moment on, they will be out of the competition and will assume any responsibility derived from their withdrawal

7.2: The runner who abandons the race outside the designated evacuation places, will have to go by their own means to the nearest evacuation point. Any runner who abandons the race and does not notify the Organization during the course of the race, will be suspended from participating in subsequent editions.

7.3: The Organization may withdraw from the race, and cancel their bib, any runner who is considered to have impaired physical or technical abilities as a result of fatigue and wear of the race, thus guaranteeing their health.

7.4: Participants are obliged to provide assistance to those injured or those who require it.

7.5: In case of accident, illness or injury that requires assistance, the Organization’s emergency telephone number must be notified. It is recalled that the GTP runs through places of difficult access to vehicles or even where you can only reach on foot. Therefore, in some cases, it may take several hours for the emergency services to reach the injured.

8.- PENALTIES

Any member of the organization and the volunteer team may record the bib number and the infraction committed, without prior notice to the runner being necessary.

  • Do not mark bib number on wrappers 3 min per unit
  • Lack of mandatory material 3 min per unit
  • Receive or return material 10 min
  • Wearing the bib folded or cut 15 min
  • Receive supplies outside of points 3 min to disqualification
  • Cutting or shortening the course 3 min to disqualification
  • Accompaniment by other people 10 min (1st warning)/

9.- CLAIMS

stating, at least, the following information:

  • Claimant data: name of the person making it, ID, who they represent
  • Data of the affected athlete(s), bib number
  • Facts that are alleged

9.2: Claims regarding the development of the test may be submitted from the moment of arrival until one hour after the publication of the provisional classifications.

9.3: Claims regarding the classifications may be submitted up to one hour after their publication.

9.4: The Competition Jury will be responsible for delivering a signed copy to the claimant.

9.5: Claims against the decisions of the Competition Jury must be submitted in writing to the RSEA Peñalara, within a maximum period of 7 calendar days, counted from the day following the publication of the classifications. To be admitted for processing, the claimant must deposit €60 as a deposit, which will be returned if the ruling is favorable. The RSEA Peñalara will resolve within a maximum period of 30 calendar days, taking into account that, if the last day is not a working day, the period will be extended to the first following working day.

9.6: The Competition Jury is an advisory body that will act in accordance with section 7 (Claims and appeal system) of the FEDME regulations

9.6.1: The Competition Jury is responsible for addressing possible claims arising from the development of the competition during and within the date of the race. This will be convened when a claim occurs.

9.6.2: Composition of the jury:

  • The race director (or technical director)
  • The finish line manager
  • Route manager
  • Timing manager
  • A representative of the athletes (chosen by drawing lots from among the first 20 classified in the race)

 

10.- ACCEPTANCE AND RESPONSIBILITY

10.1: The participants in the Gran Trail de Peñalara do so voluntarily, being fully aware of the length, elevation gain and physical demands of the race, which will take place partly at night, under possible adverse weather conditions of cold or heat, rain and wind, through mountain terrain through roads, tracks or paths.

 

10.1.1: Participants must have previous experience in mountain ultra-distance events and ensure that their physical conditions are the most appropriate to face the test. They must carry and know how to use the mandatory equipment, being their responsibility the problems that may arise in the development of the test for ignoring these requirements.

 

10.1.2: The Organization declines all responsibility in case of accident due to negligence of the runner, as well as for the loss or breakage of the personal objects of each participant. Each runner will be responsible for any damage or injury that may be caused to themselves or to third parties, exonerating the Organization and the RSEA Peñalara from any responsibility in case of accident or injury.

 

10.2: Every participant, by the fact of registering, accepts the conditions established in these Regulations, which they must know and take into consideration. Any circumstance not foreseen in these regulations will be resolved by the Competition Jury, based on the mountain racing regulations of the Madrid Mountain Federation and the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing (FEDME).

 

10.3: All participants agree to comply with the current legislation of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park.

10.4: The RSEA Peñalara reserves the exclusive right over the image of the Gran Trail de Peñalara, as well as the audiovisual and photographic exploitation of the competition. Any media or advertising project must have the express and written consent of the organization beforehand.

 

10.5: By registering, participants give their consent for the organization of the race to automatically process their personal data for the sole purpose of sports, promotional or commercial purposes.

As established by Organic Law 15/1995, of December 13, on the Protection of Personal Data, the participant has the right to access these files in order to rectify or cancel their content in whole or in part. For this purpose, it must be requested in writing at the following address: info@grantrailgtp.com

 

10.6: Likewise, those registered expressly authorize the organization the right to publish the name and surname, classification obtained, the category, the brand made and their image.

 

11.- ANNEX RELAY MODE

11.1: The Relay mode of the Gran Trail de Peñalara will be carried out by teams of two components.

 

11.1.1: For the GTP by relays, it will be highly recommended but not mandatory to have finished in the last 3 years any test of those listed in the official list of the ITRA or UTMB with 2 points 0 more and have an ITRA or UTMB index of more than 350 points.

 

11.2: In the relay mode, the following sections will have to be carried out:

– Section Relay 1 – Navacerrada (start) – La Barranca – Collado del Piornal – La Maliciosa – Canto Cochino – Collado de La Pedriza – Hoya de San Blas – Puerto de La Morcuera – Rascafría. (55 km +2,400 m approx.)

-Section Relay 2 – Rascafría – Puerto del Reventón – La Granja – Peñalara – Puerto de Cotos – Guarramillas – La Barranca – Glorieta de Piedra (Navacerrada). (47 km + 2,700 m approx.)

Joint section – Glorieta de Piedra – Navacerrada (finish line); both team members must complete this section with the bib visible, together. (1 km)

 

11.3: In the relay mode, if any of the members could not complete the route due to injury or withdrawal, the team will not appear in the classification.

 

In the event that the first relay runner withdraws or does not pass the established cut-off times and does not reach Rascafría, the second relay runner will not be able to do their section of the route.

 

11:4: A trophy will be awarded to the first three classified in each established category.

 

11.5: In the Relay mode there will be the following categories:

 

Male, Female and Mixed

 

11.6: Those participants who complete the GTP in relay mode will obtain a diploma and souvenir of finalist, collecting their arrival time in the classification of the Relay mode and by categories

 

11.7: Only for the GTP relay mode may a change of any of the team members be made, provided that the cause of force majeure is accredited with a certificate and only until September 25, 2025.

 

11.7: The rest of the points of these Regulations will be in force without any variation for the Relay mode.

 

 

12.- ENVIRONMENT

The route of the Gran Trail Peñalara race runs through places of high environmental value, spaces that have the highest figure of protection as a National Park. Therefore, it is essential that the runner scrupulously respects the rules of the race:

 

▪ Respect at all times the regulations of the natural space and follow the route marked by the organization without leaving the path or taking shortcuts.

▪ Deposit the waste generated in the selective collection containers arranged for this purpose in the refreshment points

▪ Avoid disturbing the fauna with sound or light emissions not allowed: cowbells, megaphones, etc.

▪ Follow the route in a way that does not affect the courses and backwaters of water, especially avoiding approaching the high mountain lagoons or wetlands. In the case of fords of streams, do so without stepping on the wet areas, using the bridges if they exist or stones arranged for this purpose.

▪ Do not pollute sources and torrents with your biological waste. Move at least 50 meters away from trails and water areas. Use the least amount of toilet paper, and do not leave it in the place. It is mandatory to take it with you and deposit it in the containers provided.
